Information
"In Doorways" is an ongoing personal exploration of queerness and identity. We have a predisposition to social categorization as a means of simplifying and understanding the world. Social concepts that are not easily defined or understood, such as the ambiguity of sexual orientation and gender, are often put into boxes to categorize queerness.
This project’s purpose is to highlight queerness as something that cannot be easily labeled, and to emphasize identity as something specific to the individual. My personal struggles with the misconception of my identity have led me to question what queerness means to me. Feeling that I do not belong prompted me to explore the identity of others to better understand my own.
I chose to make these photographs at the home of each person to create a more authentic portrayal of the individual without the influence of outside views. It is in these personal spaces that we make our own sense of belonging despite pressures telling us we do not.
